Evaluation of Eastern Redcedar Infestations in theNorthern Kansas Flint Hills

چکیده

Highlight: Associations among cattle stocking rate, precipitation, and eastern redcedar invasion, and possibly redcedar control measures were investigated. Redcedar numbers generally decreased as stocking rate increased. Precipitation had only a slight effect on invasion rate. Fire, cutting, and fenuron granules appear to effectively kill red cedar. Loamy upland range site consists of soils having medium-textured soil deep enough to support primarily big bluestem and Indiangrass in climax condition. Predominant slopes are 1 to 5%.

Surface Topography Influences on Structural Life Prediction

Topography describes the complex form of a surface--the undulations which make up its character. Topography comes in all shapes and forms; what is true for the surface of our planet is also true for the surfaces of engineered structures. If you have ever driven across the Flint Hills in south-eastern Kansas, you probably recognize that the only indicator you have that you are climbing a hill is...

Grassland bird responses to land management in the largest remaining tallgrass prairie.

Extensive habitat loss and changing agricultural practices have caused widespread declines in grassland birds throughout North America. The Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma--the largest remaining tallgrass prairie--is important for grassland bird conservation despite supporting a major cattle industry. In 2004 and 2005, we assessed the community, population, and demographic responses of grass...

Spatial Ecology of Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer (coluber Constrictor Flaviventris) and Great Plains Rat Snake (pantherophis Emoryi) in a Contiguous Tallgrass-prairie Landscape

The Flint Hills region of Kansas and Oklahoma encompasses the largest, contiguous tallgrass prairie in North America and is an important conservation area for many tallgrass-prairie species. We conducted a radiotelemetry study with the use of temperature-sensitive transmitters to characterize the spatial ecology of two species of snakes within a portion of this contiguous grassland. We monitore...

Estimating Ambient Ozone Effect of Kansas Rangeland Burning with Receptor Modeling and Regression Analysis

Prescribed rangeland burning in April is a long-standing practice in the Flint Hills region of eastern Kansas to maintain the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The smoke plumes originating from these fires increases ambient PM2.5 concentrations and potentially contributes to ozone (O3) exceedances in downwind communities. Source apportionment research using Unmix modeling has been utilized to estima...

Assessing changes in biomass, productivity, and C and N stores following Juniperus virginiana forest expansion into tallgrass prairie

An increase in woody plant abundance in regions historically dominated by grasses is a recent land cover change in grasslands worldwide. In tallgrass prairies of North America, this increase in woody plant cover includes the development of dense stands of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana L.). To evaluate the consequences of this ongoing land cover change for ecosystem functioning, we deve...
